Established in 1867 to protect the frontier, Fort Concho served "as a shield across the very heart of Texas." Until it was abandoned in 1889, it also served as a point of departure for southern travel to the far West and helped extend the frontier westward. Soldiers from the fort waged campaigns against the Kiowa and Comanche in 1870-1875. Fort Concho was a large post, and some 39 buildings were erected during its first decade. In 1929, the City of San Angelo began purchasing the fort property and has since restored a number of the remaining stone buildings. Fort Concho still recalls the period when it was an active military post.

Fort Concho, a National Historic Landmark, is located at 630 S. Oakes in San Angelo. The fort's museum is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm, and on Sunday 1:00pm to 5:00pm. There is a fee for admission. Call 325-657-4444 or visit their website for further information.
