Report by the Supreme Commander to the Combined Chiefs of Staff on the Operations in Europe of the Allied Expeditionary Force
6 June 1944 to 8 May 1945
By General Dwight D. Eisenhower, GPO, Washington DC 1946
On May 8, 1945, the Allies celebrated V-E Day, victory in Europe. Eisenhower had successfully completed the mission of destroying Nazi Germany. A report on the course of the war from D-Day through the German surrender was submitted by Eisenhower.
Though much credit was due Eisenhower as Supreme Allied Commander, in a victory speech he delivered in London on June 12, 1945, General Eisenhower acknowledged that, “Humility must always be the portion of any man who receives acclaim earned in blood of followers and sacrifices of his friends.”
