The Training course will be located at the
the Pohnpei Botanical Garden in the Art Deco style Japanese
Agricultural Station. This structure was the location the
Japanese government sent its leading scientists to conduct
research on the tropical Pacific's native and imported plants,
trees, and animals; hybidization; pest and disease resistant
crops; and fertilizers. This site was built in 1926 and is
listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is
one of the five structures left of the bombing of Kolonia
in World War II. The Pohnpei Visitors Bureau, Pohnpei State
Museum, and Horticulture and Agricuture Museum plan to rehabilitate
the building for several functions in the near future.
The course is geared to undergraduate and
graduate students studying historic preservation but is open
to public, professionals, government employees, and building
owners and managers. Students will learn how to survey and
inventory, evaluate, document, and analyze sites; invenstigate
problems, and recommend solutions based upon the Secretary
of the Interiors's Standards for Historic Preseration Sites,
Archeology and Cultural Landscapes.
