The subsoil
Once
all the artifact-bearing, human-created
deposits have been excavated away, the archeologist
reaches the natural subsoil. Usually no
artifacts are found in the subsoil, but
sometimes objects are carried down into
the earth by burrowing animals, such as
mice, worms, and insects. The outline of
the depression dug into the subsoil by the
soldiers shows, as well as the bottoms of
the postholes for their bunks.
The
numbers on the diagram below represents
the subsoil, where no artifacts were found.
