Dig It: Layer 1
The surface of the site
At
the surface, the location of a hut is sometimes
revealed by a depression in the ground.
Trees also find an easy place to take root
in the loose, relatively rich soil of an
old hut site. Sometimes, the roots of trees
damage archeological sites, and can make
excavating the site difficult. On the surface,
the archeologists usually find recent litter.
In the humus layer below, they frequently
find artifacts from throughout the 19th
and 20th centuries.
The
numbers on the diagram below represent artifacts
found on the surface. Click on a number
to see a picture of the artifact.
