Michter's Distillery
Shaefferstown, Pennsylvania
The manufacture of whiskey is one of the oldest industries in America. Early farmers found that making grain into whiskey gave them a product that could be transported easily and sold for profit. This distillery opened in 1753. Although several of the buildings shown here were built around 1840, many others are much newer and contain modern equipment. Later in its history it was called "Bomberger's Distillery." It continued to operate until the early 1990s, when its doors were closed for good and parts of the old buildings were taken down. Now, it is no longer a National Historic Landmark.
