Gateway Arch
St. Louis, Missouri
This is the biggest monument in the United States--larger than the Statue of Liberty or the Washington Monument. The 630 foot high, stainless steel arch was built as a memorial to the expansion of the United States across the North American continent, and especially to the role of Thomas Jefferson in the Lousiana Purchase. The architect who designed it, Eero Saarinen, was born in Finland. Like Frank Lloyd Wright, Saarinen is famous in the history of modern architecture. His 1947 design for the arch still seems daring today. You can ride an elevator-car to the top!
