It is with great sadness that we report the death of former
American Battlefield Protection Program staff member Jean E.
Travers. She died on April 11, 1994, following an intense battle
with lymphoma. Travers worked extensively on ABPP preservation
initiatives in the Shenandoah Valley and at Brandy Station. She
also headed the ABPP's cooperative project with the National
Trust for Historic Preservation on the economic benefits of
battlefield preservation. Travers, whose Park Service career
spanned 17 years, also worked as an historian for the Park
Service's Preservation Assistance Division. We will miss her
dedication, friendship, humor, and unfailing ability to see to
the heart of the matter. Travers is survived by her husband,
Ronald Shafer, and her son, Nicholas Shafer.
