The National Park Service "family" gathers at Mesa Verde for the 1925 superintendents conference. In a successful effort to create a cohesive organization, Director Stephen Mather held numerous conferences such as this. Mather stands on the ladder; to his right is Mesa Verde superintendent and respected archeologist Jesse L. Nusbaum; sitting, hat in hand, on the far right is Rocky Mountain National Park superintendent Roger W Toll, later promoted to the Yellowstone superintendency. NPS Chief Naturalists

evening program at Yellowstone
Top: The first conference of chief naturalists, held in 1929 on the University of California campus in Berkeley. The naturalists are seated on the steps of Hilgard Hall, where the emerging national park professions of education, forestry, and wildlife biology had offices in the early years. Bottom: An evening talk at Old Faithful in Yellowstone National Park, 1931. Through museum exhibits, guide hikes, and evening talks, the naturalists sought to enlighten the public about a park's natural history—but they were not responsible for setting the policies by which natural resources were managed.
