Description:US Marines surmount a stone wall as they push inland on Okinawa, where they landed with other elements of the US 10th Army on March 31, 1945. One marine (third from the left) carries a flamethrower. By April 18, US forces on the 64 mile island had driven Japanese defenders into the southern end and had reached the northern tip. Okinawa is 375 miles south of Japan. As of April 27, 1945 US casualties in the battle for the island, largest of the Ryukyu groups had reached 7,895, including 1,467 killed. As of April 12, Japanese casualties were 9,108 killed and 391 captured. April 23, 1945. (39782-FMC, National Archives).
