The mildest winter in the memory of "Old Timers", while somewhat discouraging for now sports at Longmire Springs, has been very favorable for the road construction work which has been in progress since November first. The clearing and grubbing on the section of road between Nisqually Entrance and Longmire Springs was far enough along at the end of January to permit of grading and betterment work to start. The contract for this project calls for the completion of the work, including crushed rock surfacing, by June 15.
While the snow fell has been considerably below normal, there has been sufficient depth at Paradise Valley to provide for all classes of winter sports for the many hundreds of visitors who have made the trip.
All through the holidays and until January 14, cars were able to reach Narada Falls. From there the mile and a half hike over the snow to Paradise Valley was made in a half hour. The new Winter Lodge, with all the comforts and convenience of a city hotel, has added greatly to the enjoyment of winter in Paradise Valley.
Since the 15th, of January, when the road above Longmire was closed for cars, the trip to Paradise Valley has been made by trail. The 6 1/2 miles is usually covered by visitors in about three hours.
