Architects and Landscape Architects measure buildings, landscapes, industrial structures, sites, and objects, including floating vessels, to produce existing-conditions drawings in CAD, including drawings that interpret and explain industrial processes and engineering works. Applicants must have completed at least three years in an accredited program. Course work in an accredited design major is strongly recommended

The application process is a two-part procedure.

1. Applicants must submit the following items directly to the Heritage Documentation Programs Office. Questions concerning the submission of these items should be directed to the HDP Summer Program Administrator at 202-354-2135.

   • Letter of Recommendation from a faculty member or recent employer.
     The letter must be a hard copy; digital letters will not be accepted.

   • Work Samples (Portfolio)

   Applicants will be evaluated on the following three skills:

   • hand lettering
   • freehand sketching
   • precision hand and/or computer-aided drafting ability

   Full-size reproductions are strongly recommended. All items must be folded to no larger than 9" x 12" size. (Do not submit rolled drawings in tubes.)

   Please write your name on each work sample, and label each submission as to technique (e.g. freehand pencil sketch, AutoCAD 2009 drawing, etc.).

   Do not submit originals. (Work samples will not be returned.)

   All submissions must be in hard copy; digital files will not be accepted.

   The Letter of Recommendation and the Work Sample should be mailed (or sent by delivery service) to the following address. The Work Sample must be postmarked by the application deadline.
