Eligibility
Teams or individual students of architecture (or related fields) with faculty sponsorship are eligible to compete in the
Peterson Prize. There is no entrance fee. Past or present employees of the Heritage Documentation Programs are not eligible.
Students resourceful enough and fortunate enough to have
financial support from a State
Historic Preservation Office, foundation, local historical
society, or other similar source are eligible to compete;
however, there are limitations on professionalism. First,
measured drawings produced as mitigation for a project,
which involves Federal government funds, and which will
have an adverse impact on an historic structure, are not
eligible. Second, students must be enrolled in a degree
program when working on their Peterson Prize entry. Third, measured drawings produced by employees of the National Park Service, or as part of a National Park Service contract, are not eligible.
Project
The building or structure selected for documentation must
be appropriate for inclusion in the HABS Collection. While
HDP is pleased to accept the donation of the documentation
of engineering and industrial sites for the HAER Collection,
and the donation of landscape documentation for the HALS
Collection, such projects are not eligible for the Peterson
Prize. In addition, drawings must be of a building that
has not been previously recorded by HABS through measured
drawings, or an addendum to an existing set of HABS drawings
that makes a new and substantial contribution to the understanding
of the building. Applicants should contact the Peterson
Prize Coordinator with any questions.
Drawing Regulations
Measured drawings submitted by participants must conform
to the HABS Guidelines
and Standards.
Participants should also adhere to the Peterson Prize
Rules and Recommendations.
Participants are encouraged to consult the Built
in America website at the Library of Congress for
examples of HABS measured drawings.
Entry Instructions
The faculty sponsor must submit the Peterson Prize Entry
Form (PDF) by the required deadline. The entry form
must be received at least two weeks prior to the receipt
of the completed drawings. Upon receipt of the entry form,
project teams will be provided with the requested number
of blank sheets of HABS mylar for hand-drawn projects,
or the AutoCAD title block for CAD projects. There
is no charge for these materials.
