Known as one of the most important archaeological sites discovered in Florida, the Lake Jackson Mounds have yielded some of the most significant artifacts in the state. The site was once a large ceremonial center dating back to the Fort Walton period of Florida's history (1000 A.D.-1450 A.D.). The entire complex consists of six earth temple mounds and one possible burial mound. At least part of the village and trading area, the two largest mounds and a third smaller mound are located within the state archaeological site. Pottery, stone tools and the location and shape of the mounds have been used to identify the age and culture of the site.

The remains of important tribal members have been found at the site with a rich array of burial objects including items such as copper breast plates and shell beaded necklaces. Such artifacts provide evidence of religious and trading ties with other large, pre-historic Indian ceremonial centrs in the southeastern United States.

CLIMATE, RECOMMENDED CLOTHING

Summer - Dress cool, temperature in the 90s, insect repellant recommended, drinking water if hiking, suntan lotion if planning on extended outside activity.

Winter- normally mild in the 40 to 76 degree range, wear layers of light clothing. Occasional drops into the 20's and 30's.

Interpretive programs and guided tours are given upon request, and visitation to the site is free of charge. Guided tours and interpretive programs are given upon request with two weeks notice by calling (904) 562-0042.

VISITOR IMPACTS

Pets are not allowed in camping areas, on bathing beaches, in concession areas and may be restricted in other designated areas of the park. Where pets are allowed, they must be kept on a six-foot, hand-held leash and well-behaved at all times. Service dogs are welcome in all areas of the parks.
