Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, NPS

Evaluation of Slave Emancipations and Freedom Licenses at St. Louis’ Old Courthouse

St. Louis, Missouri

The intern conducted primary research into records concerning emancipated slaves who obtained freedom licenses during the 19th century at St. Louis’ Old Courthouse. 

 

Heritage Documentation Programs-New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, NPS

NHL Schooner ERNESTINA Recording Project

New Bedford, MA

The intern served as project historian on a HAER project to document the NHL listed Schooner ERNESTINA.  The intern prepared historical narratives that detail the design, construction and operational history of the ship and its role in the exchange of goods, people, and cultures between the United States and Africa.

 

Lincoln Home National Historic Site, NPS

Research and Write a Report on the History of Domestic Help Employed by the Lincoln Family, 1844-1861

Springfield, Illinois

The intern conducted primary research and wrote a report on the history of African American, Irish, and Portuguese domestic laborers hired by the Lincoln family during their 1844 to1861 occupancy.  The intern developed a site bulletin and exhibit panel related to the Lincoln’s hired girls that will be displayed at Lincoln Home National Historic Site and on the Lincoln Home website.

 

Heritage Documentation Programs-Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS), NPS

Mt. Zion Cemetery Documentation Project

Washington, DC

The intern produced the historical report on the historical and landscape architectural significance of Mount Zion Cemetery in Washington, D.C., an important site of African American life and free black culture in Washington, D.C that was established in 1808.  The intern will also attended weekly lectures and tours as an Everett Public Service intern.

 

Valley Forge National Historic Park, NPS

Public History and Collections Conservation at Valley Forge NHP

King of Prussia, PA

The intern conducted primary historical research in the extensive park archives and in other regional archives to develop content on two important park stories—the presence of enslaved persons at Valley Forge and on farms occupied by the Continental Army during the Valley Forge encampment, and the experience of the civilians whose homes and farms were occupied by the Continental army.

Recording Fading Aspects of Traditional African American Burial Practices

Natchitoches, LA

The intern assisted in recording aspects of the local Cane River African American community’s traditional cemetery and funerary practices by conducting oral interviews with selected members of the community using digital video. 

 

National Historic Landmarks Program, NPS

Social Security Building’s WW II History National Historic Landmark Documentation

Washington, DC

The intern conducted primary and secondary research at area archives, as well as work with cultural resource professionals and historic preservationists at other Federal agencies, to update the National Historic Landmark (NHL) nomination for the Atlanta home of the prominent, African American Herndon family.  The intern also attended weekly lectures and tours as an Everett Public Service intern.

 

Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture

Documenting Minorities in the Military from Bunker Hill to Saigon

Baltimore, MD

The intern assisted the museum’s curatorial staff with primary and secondary research leading to the collection of historical information and material culture on African American military history. 

 

City of Washington, Georgia Department of Tourism

Cemetery Heritage Tourism Project

Washington, GA

The intern worked with tourism professionals to development heritage tourism brochures and pamphlets as well as a website to encourage preservation of the town’s three historic African American and European American cemeteries (Old School Cemetery, Resthaven Cemetery, and the Old Catholic Cemetery). The intern also developed a genealogy resources program to trace the heritage of 30,000 black residents living in the City of Washington and Wilkes County in 1880. 

 

Gateway National Recreation Area-Floyd Bennett Field, NPS

Update National Register Nominations for Floyd Bennett Field

Brooklyn, NY

The intern updated the historical information in Floyd Bennett Field’s existing National Register nomination by compiling recent primary and secondary research on the Field, organizing information on the condition of 150 buildings, archeological sites, and landscape structures contained in the Field, and by creating a series of GIS map graphics to represent these features. 

 

Historic Preservation Grants Division, NPS

Hurricane Katrina Relief Grants Website Development

Washington, DC

The intern developed a website documenting and promoting the successes NPS achieved in partnership with the State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs) in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama, through the Hurricane Katrina historic preservation recovery grants program.  Additionally, the intern developed heritage tourism promotional materials for the Gullah/Geechee Heritage Area stretching from Florida to North Carolina.  The intern also attended weekly lectures and tours as an Everett Public Service intern.

National Mall & Memorial Parks, NPS

National Mall and Memorial Parks’ Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration

Washington, DC

The intern worked as a part of a team to research and plan for the nation’s celebration of Abraham Lincoln’s 200th birthday anniversary at the Lincoln Memorial in April and May 2009. The intern conducted primary and secondary research and wrote a report on information associated with one or more aspects of history associated with the Lincoln Memorial.

 

Prince Williams Forest Park, NPS

Ethnographic and Archival Research Intern 

Washington, DC

The intern conducted and transcribed oral histories taken of neighboring African-American residents who have personal family histories and experiences that occurred within the park before it was established.  In addition, the intern updated the List of Classified Structures contained within the park.

 

Palo Alto Battlefield National Historic Site, NPS

Interpretation and Cultural Resources Assistant

Brownsville, TX

The intern conducted archeological surveys of the historic battlefield for Section 106 compliance and assisted with cataloging historic artifacts from the battlefield.  The intern also worked at the Visitor Center front desk greeting visitors and providing them with information on the battlefield work.

 

Independence National Historical Park, NPS

Internship in the Management of Historic Cultural Landscapes

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The intern assisted the park’s historic cultural landscape architect in applying existing research on 18th century horticulture and colonial revival landscapes to create or restore the planting plans for INDE’s landscapes and gardens. The intern surveyed the existing plants within the park’s varied landscapes for condition assessment, made plant inventories, and created references on landscape maintenance and planting.

 

Pacific West Regional Office, NPS

Expand and Improve Pacific West Region’s Cultural Resources Website

Seattle, Washington

The intern worked with regional cultural resources staff to improve and update the National Historic Landmark Program, Pacific West Region’s cultural resources website.  The intern organized and posted existing information to the website in a user-friendly format and  developed new content as well as linkages to many partners’ sites

Students must provide the following information:

  • A resume or a curriculum vita (1-2 pages) that includes: educational information; previous and current experience; publications or presentations; awards, scholarships, honors, etc.; and 2-3 personal references.
  • A cover letter that includes a brief statement, 150 words or less, of why you want the internship and why you are qualified. Please indicate 2-3 specific internships that you would like to fill.
  • A transcript. An unofficial one is acceptable.
  • At least one letter of reference from a professor or previous supervisor/employer.
