Life Along the River

RIVER
TRADE

(image) Detail from a larger painting showing a walled Mississippian village with dozens of its citizens involved in various trade related activities.

The mound cities were in many ways like our own-alive with commerce, industry, and development. This scene of everyday life in Cahokia, a city in what is now Illinois, was likely a common one along the Mississippi and its tributaries just a few hundred years before Columbus waded ashore in the Caribbean. Illustration by Lloyd K. Townsend. Use prohibitied without permission.
