One Day Lesson Plan Writing

 

• 0 – .15             Welcome and Introductions/Icebreaker (15 minutes)

• .15 – 1.15        “The Power of Place” (1 hour)           

• 1.15 – 1.30      Where to Find Information about Places (15 minutes)
(e.g.  National Register, SHPO, local resources)

• 1.30 – 1.45      Questions (15 minutes)

• 1.45 –2.00       BREAK (15 minutes)

• 2.00 – 2.30      Introduction to Teaching with Historic Places (half hour)    

• 2:30 – 3.30      Documentation Exercise #1: Choosing a Focus//Objectives (one hour)

• Introduction to National Register nomination documentation (10 minutes)

• Divide into groups // Explain Assignment (5 minutes):

-Read documentation (or assigned sections)

-Brainstorm relevant historical themes and stories represented by this historic place

-Pick one topic/story to focus on for a lesson plan

-Write a Focus Statement for a potential lesson plan

-Write at least one learning objective

*Reading Time (15 minutes)

*Discussion in Groups (15 minutes)

*Report Out by Groups (15 minutes)

• 3.30 – 4.15      LUNCH (45 minutes)

• 4.15 – 4.30      Brief  Intro to Teaching with Historic Places Lesson Plan Format (15 minutes)

• 4.30 – 5.30      Exercise #2: Selecting Documents & Formulating Student Questions (one hour)

• 5.30 – 5.45      BREAK (15 minutes)

• 5.45 – 6.15      Exercise #3: Creating Student Activities for “Putting it All Together” (half hour)

• 6.15 – 6.45      Exercise #4: Using Historic Places in Your Own Community (half hour)

• 6.45 – 7.00      Questions and Wrap Up (15 minutes)
