Shepherdstown, West Virginia
Incorporated in 1762, Shepherdstown is the oldest town in West Virginia, home to the state's first newspaper and public school, and was the first historic district in the state to be listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The hamlet's 18th - and 19th - century architecture has been characterized as the best preserved in the state. The Shepherdstown Historic District was entered into the National Register of Historic Places on August 17, 1973.
