Waysides are developed using a
team approach. Combining the park staff's knowledge of site and
subject with the technical expertise available at Harpers Ferry
Center helps to ensure that waysides are appropriate to a park's
needs and that they are consistent with NPS standards.

Because they are located outdoors, close to the features they interpret, wayside exhibits can readily answer the questions visitors have – when they have them. By engaging visitors at the times and places they want information, the visitors' experiences can be made more meaningful and much more rewarding. Why Use a Wayside Exhibit »
Preparing for a Wayside Project
Once you have decided that here are features and stories in the park to interpret with waysides, contact Harpers Ferry Center and we will help you develop a strategy for getting the work accomplished. There are two common approaches to starting a wayside project:
The manufacturing of wayside exhibits is accomplished by the Servicewide Sign Management Program contractor working under the guidance of Harpers Ferry Center’s
production specialists. The various panel imaging methods and exhibit
bases currently available are presented elsewhere in the website
along with information to help you determine which is best for your
park's needs. Wayside bases are customarily installed by park maintenance
staffs using written and videotaped instructions provided by HFC.
Production specialists are also available to provide on-site assistance.
