Photo Texture

The easiest way to make an object appear realistic is by using a photographic texture. Similar to a bumper sticker on a real car, the pixels of a photographic image adhere to the virtual surface of a 3D object. To create additional realism, Chris used a technique called bump mapping that uses the contrast information found in photographs to emboss them when rendered. In the chimney example above, the bricks appear slightly higher than the mortar as one would expect because of the application of bump mapping.
