National Park Service History Collection RG 19
A. Provenance
The materials on interpretation came from many sources, at least 25 accessions, and continues to come in, both as formal accessions and through the Harpers Ferry Center Library. WASO, regions, parks, and the service centers continue to provide material. Many past employees including Horace M. Albright, Ronald F. Lee and Ralph H. Lewis, have contributed their papers. Several researchers including Rita Cantu, Susanna Baker, C. Frank Brockman, Keith Dewar and William C. Everhart are represented in the files. Current employees continue to provide additional material.
Much of the material was written to address the on-going functions of interpretation. Other items were produced as researched histories and are often accompanied by the applicable research data. Most of the material was produced by Park Service people for internal use. However, there are several items that were published in journals, delivered as papers at meetings, etc.
Interpretive materials from non-NPS sources are also included to provide prospective.
B. History
All this material provides background for and in many cases represents the history of NPS interpretation. It shows that the interpretive function predates the Park Service and even the parks themselves. "Interpretation" includes publicity, explanation, information, education, philosophy, etc., and the material provides several definitions of this concept. The "traditional" beginnings of Park Service interpretation are traced to the activities of Drs. Harold Bryant and Loye H. Miller at Yosemite in 1920, although it is recognized that concessionaires, park personnel, soldiers, and authors indulged in this activity prior to its formal recognition. Since the National Park Service included predominantly natural and archeological resources until the 1930's, early interpretation was nature-oriented.
Much of this early National Park Service interpretation went by the name of education or nature study. As the National Park System grew to include historical and recreational resources, other aspects of interpretation developed. The term "interpretation" which became applied to this function is still not well understood by the public.
C. Summary
The material on the History of Interpretation has been divided into five series. By far the largest amount is in Series I- Chronology - 8 lf. (1993) with expectations of growing. Series II - WASO and regional office files - 7 lf. Series III - Surveys - 3.5 lf. The report that resulted from the 1972 survey is housed with the survey material. However, the collection does not possess the survey material for the 1974 Cantu/Baker report and material regarding that survey has been placed into Series IV - Special Reports - .5 lf. Series V - Brockman study - .5 lf. - includes the material former naturalist C. Frank Brockman gathered for his research in the history of National Park Service interpretation. Series VI - DSC Interpretive Planning - estim. 35 lf. - consists of Interpretive planning office files transferred from Denver Service Center in the late 1970s. Series VII - Freeman Tilden Award collection (HFCA-1070 and 1090) (1989- ) - 3 lf. - consists of nomination materials submitted by regions for the annual award. Series VIII - Interpretive Challenge files - 1.5 lf. - came from the WASO Division of Interpretation. There is also an appendix containing a printout of materials on interpretation in the Harpers Ferry Center Library.
D. Related material
Much of the material came from accessions that included material placed throughout
the collection. Many items in the oral history collection cover interpretive
history. Some of the museum items, such as audiovisual equipment and materials,
were used in interpretation, as were most of the films. The personal papers,
especially Ronald Lee's are especially useful. Most histories of the National
Park Service devote a chapter to interpretation. Many of the periodicals, especially In Touch, were put out expressly to serve interpretation. Other topics
within the NPSHC that relate to interpretation include reports, public relations,
conferences, minutes of meetings, memos, manuals, special events and programs,
biographies, environmental education, history of the museum function, publicity,
general NPS history, training materials, and ranger activities.
