Objects for George Washington’s Office
Some historic spaces, like George Washington's office at Valley
Forge, have such an important message to tell that it is almost
imperative that they be furnished. Curators did not have an inventory
or drawings of this room. Site specific evidence was slim. However,
curators furnished this space by culling information from a variety
of sources:
- original objects;
- entries from Washington's account books;
- knowledge of Washington's personal habits;
- knowledge of common period practices, both military and civilian;
- use of comparative inventories.
