Chickamauga Visitor Center
These exhibits tell the story the Union and Confederate battles
here in the fall of 1863. As the visitor approaches the main exhibit
room from the lobby, graphics and text on panels in the passageway
provide in-depth interpretation of the causes of the Civil War.
Then, exhibits on the battle use vivid text, graphics, mannequins,
models, artifacts, and audiovisual elements to provide detailed
military information as well as the human side of the story.
On a central platform, a reproduction of an officer's tent does
double duty as an artifact case. The tent is furnished with artifacts
which an officer would have used. One end of the tent is open, but
acrylic glazing encloses the objects and forms part of a hidden
structure which provides a protective environment with fiber-optic
lighting. Realistic cast figures of two soldiers with their weapons
– one Union and one Confederate – are mounted within
a scenic display on the platform.
A 24-foot wide by 4-foot high panorama map was created with digital
three-dimensional mapping techniques to provide a bird's eye perspective
of the battlefield and its surrounding area. Scale models of horse-drawn
battery wagons in a display below interpret the movement of men
and materials to and from the battlefields.
