Peaks of Otter Visitor Center
“The Lure of the Mountains” exhibition describes how
this region of Virginia has attracted visitors for centuries due
to its incredibly diverse natural history and pleasant climate.
Native Americans saw the area as a rich hunting ground and entrepreneurs
of the nineteenth century built hotels to accommodate the growing
tourism industry.
The exhibit draws from images and objects already in the park collection,
donations from neighboring communities, and the skills of maintenance,
engineering, and interpretive staff to create a compelling, object-rich
exhibit within a modest budget. Low tech interactives document the
historic timeline of the region and visits by well known naturalists,
artists and historical figures.
