NPS UniGuide Sign & Information System
The Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD) recently announced
the recipients of its 2003 annual design awards. The winners include
the UniGuide Sign and Information System, the National Park Service's
new standards for outdoor signs. The UniGuide standards, developed
through the Office of NPS Identity at Harpers Ferry Center, provide
planning, design, installation, and maintenance guidelines for the
full range of sign types used in national parks.
The SEGD is an international association of graphic designers,
architects, landscape architects, and sign manufacturers involved
in the design and fabrication of graphic elements in the environment.
Each year, the society bestows awards for the best examples of environmental
graphic design from around the world. Past winners include wayfinding
progams for the Charles deGaulle Airport, the San Diego Zoo, the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and outdoor graphics for
the 2002 Winter Olympic Games.
The latest recipients include a total of 36 projects. Six of the
projects received an honor award, which is the highest prize granted
by SEGD. In issuing an Honor Award for the UniGuide program, the
judges said: "Hooray for the National Park Service! Finally,
an understanding of what the user needs to create signage and wayside
exhibits. This manual will assure complete continuity in all forms
of communication at the parks. Clearly great work went into testing
and evaluation of color, typography, and materials. The end user
was at the forefront of this project, and visitors will come to
appreciate all the thoughtful work in this study."
