Four Stages of Geologic Evolution
The series of four illustrations above – made for a visitor center exhibit – show the geologic formation of Badlands National Park over time. The illustrations start one million years ago and end one million years into the future. Intermediate steps show Badlands 500,000 years ago and today. With art direction from Michael Lacome and Tom Patterson of Harpers Ferry Center, 3D mapping contractor Alex Tait made the digital illustrations. Alex started with a USGS Digital Elevation Model (DEM) showing the Badlands today. He then manipulated the present-day DEM to reverse engineer it back to the past and project it into the future.
