Herbert Hoover National Historic Site announces the release and availability of the Hoover Creek Stream Management Plan and Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The EIS is available online (PDF file, 8.5 MB).

The Hoover Creek EIS examined five management alternatives for mitigating stream flooding and erosion that threaten both the National Historic Site and the Presidential Library and Museum. The public participated in two meetings since 2004 and were invited to review and comment on the draft EIS in September 2005. The park incorporated public comments and agency consultations in developing management alternatives and analyzing their environmental impacts. The environmentally preferred alternative, as determined through the EIS process, protects the National Historic Site resources from the 50-year recurrence flood.

“The National Historic Site completed the Hoover Creek EIS to comply with the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA),” park superintendent Cheryl Schreier said, “As stewards of public land and resources, we included the public in the decision-making process.”

Construction will not begin until funds are appropriated for the project.

Herbert Hoover National Historic Site and the Hoover Presidential Library-Museum are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Time. Both are off I-80 at exit 254 in West Branch, Iowa.
