Herbert Hoover: From Iowa to the World
OverviewAcquaint students with Herbert Hoover's boyhood in Iowa and his later accomplishments as a global humanitarian. This guide has pre-visit and post-visit activities to complement a field trip to the National Historic Site. The activities are recommended for grades six through eight. Classroom teacher and park ranger Daniel Stevenson revised and updated this curriculum as part of the Teacher to Ranger to Teacher Program.
Students will be able to:
- Relate the events of Herbert Hoover's childhood in West Branch, Iowa, that may have motivated his accomplishments and public works.
- Understand the daily life of a rural community in the 1870s and 1880s and connect that experience to their own daily lives.
- Describe and evaluate the activities that led to Hoover's recognition as a good citizen of the world.
