The Hawaiʻi Volcanoes Lodge Company has softly opened the Volcano House sm. Presently, they have sandwiches and other food items for sale. They plan to begin accepting room reservations in 2013. For more information, please visit their new web site, http://www.hawaiivolcanohouse.com.

The Volcano House sm and restaurant is located across the street from the Kīlauea Visitor Center and on the rim of Kīlauea Caldera.

`a`a flowing over an older flow of pahoehoe.

The two types of Hawaiian lava differ in appearance but are chemically alike.  Pahoehoe has a smoother and ropey surface where a`a is jagged and clinkery.
