Hele mai! Come explore an isolated
refuge of rare plants in a remnant
old-growth forest
When: These hikes are offered once a month on a weekend. Please check our Schedule of Events for future programs
Time: 10:00 a.m to 3:00 p.m
Registration is Required:. This program is limited to 15 people due to the fragile nature of this kipuka. Call 808-985-6011 for reservations
Where: Those registered for this free program should meet at Kahuku's gate (located between the 70 and 71 mile markers on the mauka (mountain) side of Hwy 11, and approximately 42 miles south of Kilauea Visitor Center and 70 miles south of Hilo).
What: 1.5 mile hike - 5 hours
View some of the rare plants and wildlife that inhabit this treasured Kahuku kipuka. There will be opportunities to protect this rain forest by removing the invasive kahili ginger and other invasive, non-native plants.
What to Wear: Sturdy hiking shoes, long pants, sunscreen, and protection from the weather (jacket/rain jacket). Please make sure you clean your boots and your car tires so that you do not bring non-native seeds into the park.
What to Bring: Water (there is NO water available in this area), daypack, garden gloves, mosquito repellent, lunch, snacks, camera.
Note: This hike can be challenging. There is a 400' to 800' elevation change - depending on the route the ranger choses to take. Participants should be able to scramble over fallen trees, rough lava rock, and slippery wet terrain. Weather can be sunny, cool, or rainy.
Also Note: the Park's Kahuku area is open to the public every weekend except the 1st Saturday of the month(Saturday and Sunday) from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. The gate will be locked at 3:00 pm.
