11/11/2012Location: Kahuku Unit | Map Fee Information: Free To Friends Members
This month's 3-hour, 2.6-mile round trip walk will explore the newly opened Palm Trail in the park's Kahuku Unit. The Palm Trail is a 2.6 mile loop through scenic pasture, along an ancient cinder cone, with some of the best panoramic views Kahuku has to offer. Along the way are relics of the ranching era, sections of remnant native forest, and amazing volcanic features from the 1868 eruptive fissures. The entrance to Kahuku is on the mauka (mountain) side of Highway 11 between mile markers 70 and 71 in Ka'u. Meet at the Palm trailhead, which is two miles up the unpaved main road (accessible with 2-wheel-drive vehicles). The walk is free to Friends members (though non-members are welcome to join the non-profit Friends group in order to attend). Entry to Kahuku is free. To register, contact Friends of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park at (808) 985-7373 or email@example.com. For more info, visit www.fhvnp.org.
