Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument was created by Presidential Proclamation on March 25, 2013. It is one of the newest additions to the national park system. Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Monument is one of about 400 units in the National Park System.

Once free, Tubman longed for her friends and family and returned to Maryland about 13 times to rescue them from slavery.
