(Kula) Haleakalā National Park is now recruiting applicants for its Pōhai Maile Internship Program to be held June 10-28, 2013. Applicants must be Hawai'i residents and currently enrolled in grades 9-12. Neighbor island interns must provide their own housing on Maui in proximity to the park or a designated pick-up site. There is no fee to participate in the program.

The three-week internship will introduce local youth to park programs and generate interest in careers related to natural resources management, interpretation, and facilities management. The interns will be afforded additional opportunities during the program to meet and work with other federal, state, and non-profit environmental agencies to build their professional network and better understand conservation issues affecting Maui County.

Interested students must be available full-time between June 10-28, 2013. Program hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., not including travel time to and from the park. Free transportation to the park will be provided from designated sites in Central Maui and Upcountry. Interns are eligible to receive a living allowance of $25 per day to help offset the cost of supplies and equipment they will need for the program that is not provided by the park.

Heading into its third year, the Pōhai Maile program was created in 2011 along with the Kupukupu 'Āina middle school and 'Imi i ka Lama college-level internship programs.

Haleakalā National Park encompasses two regions: The Summit District on the upper slopes of Haleakalā, which reaches elevations between 7,000-10,000 feet, and the Kīpahulu District that stretches along East Maui's beautiful coastline.

Twelve students will be selected through a competitive process that includes a formal application and interview. Application packets may be obtained on our park website at www.nps.gov/hale or by contacting the park's Internship Coordinator, Kūhea Paracuelles, at (808) 572-4452 or Kuhea_Paracuelles@nps.gov. Completed applications must be postmarked by Friday, March 15, 2013.
