George Washington Memorial Parkway
Your Safety

Safety is a priority while traveling along the Parkway. Remember to obey posted speed limit signs and use caution while driving, especially at night. Wildlife, including deer, will approach and cross the roadway. During the colder months, the Parkway's bridges and overpasses will often freeze before the rest of the roadway.

Do not leave valuables in a parked car. Place them out of sight before arriving at your destination, or carry them with you during your visit. Car break ins have occurred at several parkway sites, including Turkey Run Park and Great Falls Park.

If you are planning an outdoor activity, dress for the weather. Washington D.C. has hot and humid temperatures in the summer. Winter temperatures go below freezing. Carry your own water. Some sites along the Parkway have water fountains or snack bars, others do not.

If you observe an animal acting strangely, report it to a park ranger. Wildlife should not approach a person. Remember that feeding or disturbing wildlife is not permitted on any of the Parkway's sites.
