America's Best Idea

Coming to PBS September 27, 2009

The National Parks: America's Best Idea is a six-episode series directed by Ken Burns and written and co-produced by Dayton Duncan.

Special Evening Program: “America’s Best Idea”

Arlington House
Saturday, September 19, 2009.
7:00 p.m.

A special preview screening of the new Ken Burns documentary on the National Park Service, “America’s Best Idea.” Following the screening visitors will tour the house and grounds and learn about the history of Arlington House and the current National Park Service efforts to preserve and restore this national treasure.

Clara Barton Evening Open House Program

7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

Clara Barton National Historic Site celebrates the debut of "The National Parks – America’s Best Idea", a film by Ken Burns, as part of the annual Fall Lamplight Open House on Saturday, September 26, 2009, between 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. View a sneak preview of the film and experience both the grandeur and solitude a visit to America's National Parks offer while you enjoy an evening visit to the first National Park Service site dedicated to the accomplishments of an American woman, Clara Barton.

During the Open House, learn about one of America's Best Ideas, the Clara Barton National Historic Site. Through interpretation, original objects, and artifacts, visitors will hear compelling stories about Clara Barton and the history of her home, headquarters, and warehouse, including its current stewardship and educational opportunities as a unit of the National Park Service.

Did You Know?
Arlington House was originally built as a memorial to George Washington. Construction began in 1802 and the home was finished in 1818.
