  • Objectives

    Students will:

    1) Create a name tag for their field trip to Roosevelt Island.

    2) Identify the appropriate dress for visiting Roosevelt Island.

    3) Identify at least two characteristics of good conduct on the island.

    4) Sing a song of Roosevelt Island birding.

    Materials

    Laminated bird name tags (one per student)

    Peel-off name labels (one per student, prepared by teacher) to fit in the space on the bird name tags.

    3. Copies of "Ode to Roosevelt Island" (one per student) - sung to the melody of Beethoven's Ode to Joy

    Procedures

    1) Direct students to count off by 6's. Distribute Cardinal tags to the 1's, Great Blue Heron tags to the 2's, Barred Owl tags to the 3's, etc. Direct each student to attach her/his peel-off name label (prepared by the teacher in advance) to the tag.

    2) Describe appropriate clothing for visiting Roosevelt Island. (This information can be obtained from the Rangers and is dependent on the forecasted weather.) Select a student to describe inappropriate dress for the trip. Select a student to describe appropriate dress for the trip.

    3) With the help of the students, identify the characteristics of good conduct for the trip.

    4) Teach the students the lyrics and the melody to "Ode to Roosevelt Island." Allow them a few practice rounds. Tell them that they will sing the song at appropriate times on the island.
