
The
Ridge Trail is a 1.5 mile (2.4 km) trail between Old Dominion Drive and The
Potomac River at Difficult Run stream. This trail involves walking on hilly
to flat terrain.. The trail follows a historic roadbed used by travelers to
the falls and by settlers headed west. Deer and pileated woodpeckers are often
seen in this typical upland forest along the entire Ridge Trail. The trail
traverses the Park and can be accessed at the intersection with the Carriage
Road. Follow the directions for the Carriage Road Trail from the Visitor Center
until the trail intersects with the Ridge Trail. At this intersection a left
turn onto the Ridge Trail from the Carriage Road will lead .9 miles, passing
the
River Trail terminus and ridge top picnic table ending at a spur trail that
leads down to the Difficult Run Trail (2 miles from the Visitor Center. Return
on the River Trail to the Carriage Road Trail or turn right at the River Trail
intersection to return. A right turn (north) onto the Ridge Trail will lead
.6 miles of generally flat terrain through upland forest to the park entrance
road. Return on the trail to the Carriage Road or take the Swamp- Ridge Connector
Trail and return via the Swamp trail.
