General Rules and Regulations
Help protect your National Park. Removing any objects from the park is prohibited. This includes collecting plants, rocks, wildlife, other natural materials, and cultural/archaeolgical items. Disturbing, injuring, and feeding wildlife is not allowed.
Alcoholic beverages are not permitted in the park.
All picnic tables are first come, first serve. No ground fires are permitted. Collecting wood for fires is prohibited.
You may bring your own grill, but must use charcoal or artificial fuels. Please deposit all coals in the red trash cans provided around the picnic area.
There are no permits required for a picnic and the standard entrance fees will apply.
Posting signs in the park and attaching them to trees or park signs are not permitted. No items may be attached to or hung from a tree. Examples include nets, hammocks, balloons, and pinatas. Items such as hammocks and volleyball nets may be brought to the park if they have their own supports.
Vehicles may not drive on any unpaved road or trail.
A loading/unloading zone has been provided on each side of the entrance road, next to the picnic area. They are clearly marked with signs. One unloading zone includes a ramp for easy unloading of picnic supplies, strollers, and wheelchairs. Stopping to unload or load at any other location along the entrance road, maintenance yard entrance, or the small lot behind the Visitor Center is prohibited.
Obey all traffic signs and posted speed limits.
No overnight parking or camping is allowed. All vehicles must exit the park by dark.
Pets
Pets must be on a six foot leash at all times, throughout the entire park. There are no off-leash areas in Great Falls Park.
Pets are welcome on all trails in the park and in the picnic area.
No pets, with the exception of service animals, are permitted in the Visitor Center or restroom facilities. Pets are not permitted on any Ranger-led programs.
Owners must clean up after their pets.
Pets may NOT be tied out or left unattended at any time. Please do not leave a pet unattended in a vehicle. On a warm or hot day, the interior temperature in a vehicle can be fatal to pets.
Swimming
Swimming and wading are prohibited at Great Falls Park. The Potomac River contains dangerous currents and deadly hydraulics. Use caution while near the river and stay at least six feet from the edge of the shoreline.
Fishing and Hunting
A Maryland or Virginia state fishing license is required for all fishermen over the age of 16. Entering the river is prohibited.
Line fishing is allowed, but net fishing is prohibited.
Hunting is prohibited at Great Falls Park.
