Status of the Parkway after Hurricane Isabel

November 12 , 2003

The Dyke Marsh boardwalk suffered severe damage from Hurricane Isabel in September 2003.

The Swamp Trail/Boardwalk on Theodore Roosevelt Island remains closed until further notice.

The following sites have reopened:

  • The Mount Vernon Trail is now open for public use. However, trail users should be careful of storm and construction debris alongside the trail. The debris should be removed within the next week and is not considered a safety concern.
  • Potomac Heritage Trail
  • Theodore Roosevelt Island (Swamp Trail Boardwalk closed)
  • Fort Marcy
  • Turkey Run Loop Trail
  • Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve - Haul Road
  • Belle Haven Marina

Join a ranger for a brief overview of the significance of the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial. Then take a short walk to see another symbol of freedom, the Netherlands Carillon. Meet at the statue.

Friends of Dyke Marsh Bird Walks

Belle Haven Park and Dyke Marsh Wildlife Preserve

Join the Friends of Dyke Marsh, a volunteer group dedicated to preserving and enhancing Dyke Marsh, for weekly bird walks, every Sunday, weather permitting, in and around the Belle Haven Park/Dyke Marsh area. More information can be obtained at http://www.fodm.org.

Volunteer! - Watershed Cleanup

Belle Haven Park and Adjacent Area

Show you care…Join rangers and others in keeping the park clean. This is a great on-going opportunity for individuals, families, and community groups. Note: A Parental Approval Form must be signed for minors in advance of work. Sponsored by the National Park Service and The Campagna Center's Retired and Senior Volunteer Program. Meet at the bathrooms directly next to the Mt. Vernon Trail.

Become

Junior Ranger!

 Introduction to Junior Ranger programs for kids.

A Junior Ranger is someone who works with National Park Service rangers to learn about natural and cultural resources in the park.

Kids in grades 3-6 can become official Junior Rangers by participating in three of the George Washington Memorial Parkway's Junior Ranger Programs, volunteering to do a service project, and completing a nature journal.

The programs are free, although reservations are required.

Limited to 15 children per session

Theodore Roosevelt Island Safari

 

2-3 p.m.

Join a ranger for an easy, 1 mile hike and learn about the history and natural environment of Theodore Roosevelt Island.

Wear sturdy shoes and bring water and binoculars (if you have them).

Meet at the bulletin board, just across the pedestrian bridge on the island.

Don't let winter stop you from enjoying the great outdoors! Join a ranger for a moderate to strenuous 1-mile hike at Turkey Run Park . Wear sturdy shoes and bring water and binoculars (if you have them). Meet by the bulletin board at Parking Lot C-1.

Fireside Ranger Talk – Animal Antics

Fort Hunt Park

Cozy up to the warm fireplace and learn about the animals that live in the park. You'll learn amazing facts to share with your friends. Learn about what happens to animals in the winter (-hibernation). Meet the ranger at Picnic Pavilion A.
