George Washington Carver National Monument

Traveling Trunk Program

What is the Traveling Trunk Program?

The Traveling Trunk program consists of three types of themed trunks that may be shipped to schools, libraries, museums, and other groups across the United States. These trunks are wonderful educational tools from which children of all ages may learn. George Washington Carver National Monument pays to ship the trunks to the borrowers. The only cost to the borrower is the return shipping fee, estimated around $45.

African American Traveling Trunk

The African-American Traveling Trunk contains books, videos, games, costumes, and many types of hands-on learning tools. The theme of this trunk is African-American history as told through the National Park Service. People and places included in the trunk are George Washington Carver, Booker T. Washington, Tuskegee Institute, Maggie L. Walker, Mary McLeod Bethune, and others. Available in both large and medium sizes, the large African-American trunk is used locally by teachers and groups who can come to the park and pick it up. However, the smaller trunk is shippable. Also included are brochures and bulletins relating to famous African-Americans and their achievements, as well as information about 19th century living.

George Washington Carver Traveling Trunk

The George Washington Carver Traveling Trunk is an overview of Dr. Carver’s life. This trunk contains a variety of hands-on objects, photographs, books, posters, costumes, videos, and supportive instructional materials related to the life and work of Dr. Carver. The trunk contains a simple science experiment to help children learn.

Tuskegee Airmen Traveling Trunk

The Tuskegee Airmen trunk contains a video, slide shows, posters, books, charts, models, and brochures about the African-American Air Corps formed during World War II. The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of exclusively African-American pilots, navigators, and instructors who were based at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama from 1940 to 1946.
