Although
this cemetery was located on the Carver farm, many people
from the surrounding area are buried here. The fact that
relatives, neighbors and people from the surrounding area
were placed side by side gives us an idea of the closeness
of the early settlers and their dependence on each other.
Among those buried
here are Moses and Susan Carver. George Washington Carver
was buried at his beloved Tuskegee after his death January
5,1943.
The
rock wall surrounding the cemetery duplicates the one built
by Moses Carver. The rocks were taken out of the fields
where he intended to raise crops, and hauled to this site by
wagon. The wall was built to protect the graves from the
livestock. Stones were placed, one on top of the other,
without mortar, to form the wall.
