Gulf Islands National Seashore Superintendent Jerry Eubanks announced today that the Perdido Key Beach Road located inside the Perdido Key Area in the Florida District will be closed temporarily beginning Monday, June 15 through June 19 for sand removal. During the closure, visitors will still have access to Johnson Beach and facilities including shade shelters, restrooms, and the lifeguarded beach. During the road closure, visitors will have access to the beach by walking but because of the heavy equipment needed to remove the high volume of sand on the roadway, the road and beach crossovers will be closed. Eubanks said, “Work will progress from west to east. Once the sand is removed in a section, that area of the beach road will reopen.” Heavy amounts of sand on the road have made it difficult for the public to drive and park along the roadside. For more information call the Naval Live Oaks Visitor Center at (850) 934-2600 or visit our website at www.nps.gov/guis.

Did You Know?
Because of the tropical-like conditions, the U. S. Army established the Cat Island War Dog Training Camp in south Mississippi during World War II. A variety of dog breeds were trained to guard, deliver messages, and attack the enemy. Cat Island is part of Gulf Islands National Seashore.
