Superintendent Jerry Eubanks announced that the Florida Department of Transportation and Gulf Islands National Seashore have started repairs to the section of the J. Earle Bowden Way from Pensacola Beach to Opal Beach. Road repairs are needed for the eastern end at Navarre Beach. This section was overwashed by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike.
Visitors need to observe beach safety flags while swimming in the Santa Rosa Area.
To keep visitors informed of summer park operations, a new service, Dial and Discover, was initiated. Visitors who are in different park areas, may use their cell phones at no charge except their cell plan usage to call 850-677-1089 and press a corresponding number for additional information: #1 Fort Pickens, #2 Bird Nesting, #3 Fort Pickens Road, #4 Fort Pickens Campground, #5 Santa Rosa Road, #6 Fort Barrancas and #7 Perdido Key Area.
Visitors are reminded to be safe because a lot of storm related debris is in the area and that footwear is strongly recommended while walking on the beach or wading in the water.
For additional information about Seashore projects and programs contact the Naval Live Oaks Visitor Center at 850-934-2600 or visit our website at www.nps.gov/guis.
