GulfIslandsNational Seashore Announces

October 2009 Programs

“Fall is the perfect time of year to enjoy the outdoors and learn about history by exploring Gulf Islands National Seashore,” states Superintendent Jerry Eubanks.

·         Sunday, October 4th at 2:00 p.m., Participants will learn about the day-to-day Civil War Soldier Life stationed on Ship Island, with emphasis on the African American soldiers stationed there during the Civil War.  Learn the Civil War rifle drill, see items used by soldiers of the day, and march into battle against the enemy. This one hour program targets ages 9-12 but everyone is welcome.  Meet at Pavilion #4.

·         Sunday, October 11th at 2:00 p.m., a presentation about Civil War Infantry and Cavalry Weapons will be conducted by Civil War re-enactor, Curtis Makamson. Historic replicas including muskets, pistols, and edged carbines will be featured during the presentation. This program will be held in the visitor center auditorium.

·         Sunday, October 18th at 2:00 p.m., The use of map and compass is one of the most basic of outdoor skills.  Join us on an Orienteering workshop, we'll cover basic map reading skills, GPS systems, compass skills and then put it all to use on an orienteering adventure. Meet at Pavilion #1 and bring a compass if you have one.

·         Sunday, October 25th at 2:00 p.m., The salt marsh is home for many species of animals and plants.  Learn how marsh plants provide the foundation for a healthy habitat and how plants and animals have adapted to this challenging environment.  This easy Marsh Walk will last for about an hour and will meet in at the visitor center.

Passenger ferry services depart from the Gulfport Small Craft Harbor at the intersection of U.S. Highways 90 and 49.  Contact Ship Island Excursions at (228) 864-1014 for more information about ferry service to West Ship Island.  Guided 30 – 40 minute Fort Massachusetts Tours on West Ship Island are available.  Tours are daily at 10:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Tour times are approximate and may vary with the arrival of the ferry.  Learn why Fort Massachusetts was built on Ship Island and what it was protecting.  Meet just inside the fort’s entrance.

The Gulf Islands Visitor Center is located off U.S. Highway 90 East in Ocean Springs.  The William M. Colmer Visitor Center is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  For more information about Gulf Islands National Seashore and programs offered, call 228-875-9057 ext. 4100 or visit the park’s website at www.nps.gov/guis.

Did You Know?
The Third System fortifications consisted of 42 forts built between 1816 and 1870. They were used to guard all the principal harbors, rivers, and naval yards of the United States. Only the Advanced Redoubt of Fort Barrancas at Gulf Islands National Seashore was built entirely for land defense.
