September 2009 Programs
“Gulf Islands National Seashore offers diverse programs for all ages during the month of September,” states Superintendent Jerry Eubanks.
· Sunday September 6th at 2:00 p.m., learn about challenging conditions on Ship Island during the Civil War, at the Surviving Ship Island ranger-led program. Meet at the William M. Colmer Visitor Center.
· Sunday September 13th at 2:00 p.m., join a volunteer naturalist for the Mississippi’s Barrier Islands program to explore theories of barrier island formation, discover island changes over the past century, and consider the future of the islands. Meet at the William M. Colmer Visitor Center.
· Sunday, September 20th at 2:00 p.m., during Cosmic Connections, learn about celestial navigation used by our ancestors, discover fall constellations, and hear star lore. Meet at the William M. Colmer Visitor Center.
· Sunday, September 27th at 2:00 p.m., join a ranger for Trees in the Forest, where families will learn to identify trees using leaves, needles, bark, and seeds. This ½ mile walk meets at the Nature’s Way Loop.
Passenger ferry services depart from the Gulfport Small Craft Harbor at the intersection of U.S. Highways 90 and 49. Contact Ship Island Excursions at (228) 864-1014 for more information about ferry service to West Ship Island. Guided 30 – 40 minute Fort Massachusetts Tours on West Ship Island are available. Tours are daily at 10:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Tour times are approximate and may vary with the arrival of the ferry. Learn why Fort Massachusetts was built on Ship Island and what it was protecting. Meet just inside the fort’s entrance.
The Gulf Islands Visitor Center is located off U.S. Highway 90 East in Ocean Springs. The William M.
