Gulf Islands National Seashore Announces Anniversary Event

To commemorate the 93rd anniversary of the National Park Service, Gulf Islands National Seashore will present a 45-minute sneak preview on Tuesday, August 25 at 10 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the Naval Live Oaks auditorium of the upcoming 12-hour film by Ken Burns, The National Parks, America's Best Idea.  The Ken Burns documentary premieres nationwide on September 27, on Public Broadcasting Stations.  The sneak preview invites you on a journey through breathtaking landscapes to explore the stories of the men and women who fought tirelessly to preserve our nation's most magnificent natural places.

“If you have ever wondered what Gulf Islands National Seashore has in common with the Grand Canyon and the Statue of Liberty, you should come see this program,” said Eubanks. “Many people don’t know how many great places they have to enjoy in this country,” Eubanks added. “These National Parks belong to you.”

Superintendent Eubanks encourages everyone to enjoy the National Seashore and join us for our ranger-led programs.  For a complete program schedule and more information, call 934-2600 or visit our website at www.nps.gov/guis.

Did You Know?
The Third System fortifications consisted of 42 forts built between 1816 and 1870. They were used to guard all the principal harbors, rivers, and naval yards of the United States. Only the Advanced Redoubt of Fort Barrancas at Gulf Islands National Seashore was built entirely for land defense.
