Fort Pickens Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

Superintendent Jerry Eubanks announced today that the park has scheduled an official ribbon cutting ceremony on Tuesday, June 2, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. to celebrate the reopening of Fort Pickens Road. Please park at the Santa Rosa Island Authority north parking lot immediately outside of the Fort Pickens entrance gate. The event will be held near the Park’s entrance sign, just a short walk from the parking area. Elected officials, community leaders, representatives from the Federal Highway Administration, and Florida Department of Transportation, will be there to commemorate the reopening of this roadway. The road reopened to vehicular and pedestrian traffic on Friday, May 22, 2009 after being closed since portions of the road were destroyed by Hurricane Ivan in the summer of 2004. The Fort Pickens Area attracts tourists from around the world to enjoy its sparkling blue waters, white sand beaches, 19th century historic Fort Pickens, picnic areas, nature trail, and campground. Superintendent Eubanks said, “While there is still much work to be completed, we are so pleased to have this roadway open once again for the visiting public.
