Florida District Program Schedule, Fall 2009, Beginning August 16

 

Naval Live Oaks Visitor Center is open daily 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. There is an $8 entrance fee at Rosamond Johnson Beach, Opal Beach, and Fort Pickens Area.  Be prepared for intense heat, drink plenty of water, use sunscreen with SPF rating of 30 or higher, and wear sunglasses and a hat.  Call Naval Live Oaks Visitor Center at (850) 934-2600 for updated information or visit our website at www.nps.gov/guis.  Ranger led programs are free and subject to change.  Park Visitor Centers are closed Christmas Day. 

 

FortPickensArea

The Fort Pickens Area is open daily 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Fort Pickens Visitor Center is open

9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. March through October and 8:30 a.m. to 4:oo p.m. November through February.  Ranger guided tours daily at 2:00 p.m.  (30-45 minutes)

 

Stargazing with the Escambia Amateur Astronomers' Association

Weather permitting, meet at Battery Worth Picnic Area.

Fridays, Sept. 18, and Oct. 16, sunset to 10:00 p.m.

 

FortBarrancasArea

Special Events

Stargazing with the Escambia Amateur Astronomers' Association Weather permitting, meet at Battery Worth Picnic Area, Fridays, Sept. 18 & Oct. 16, sunset to 10:00 p.m.

 

National Public Lands Day Coastal Cleanup at Perdido Key, Naval Live Oaks, Fort Pickens and Santa Rosa Areas on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Call Ranger Amanda Carrigan-Grissom at (850) 916-3001 for information. Bring sun block, water and a hat. 

 

Sound Side Serenade at Naval Live Oaks Picnic Area, Saturday, October 17, 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Enjoy an afternoon of music outdoors.  Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on.

In 1828, John Q. Adams designated the Naval Live Oaks Area of Gulf Islands National Seashore as the first United States tree farm. Live oak trees are known for their incredible density and resistance to disease. They provided durable wood for the construction of early naval vessels.
