Approaching Tropical Weather
Closes Florida District
Due to the tropical storm warnings that include heavy rain and high tides in the Florida District, Gulf Islands National Seashore will close all areas including: Fort Pickens, Santa Rosa (Opal Beach), Okaloosa, Perdido Key, Naval Live Oaks, and Fort Barrancas Areas at 4:00 p.m. today, Sunday August 16, 2009. J. Earle Bowden Road will remain open. When announcing this closure, Superintendent Jerry Eubanks said that with this system predicted to impact the Florida District, the National Seashore will evacuate all visitors including campers and Night Owl pass holders and close down the Fort Pickens Road, and all facilities. "We need to close the Florida District at 4:00 p.m. for the safety of our visitors and employees," Eubanks said.
Gulf Islands National Seashore will reopen areas in the Florida District after the storm has passed and the staff has had an opportunity to mitigate any hazards caused by the severe weather. For information about Gulf Islands National Seashore visit the park's at www.nps.gov/guis.

Of the seven species of sea turtles, four species nest at Gulf Islands National Seashore. Sea turtle hatchlings instinctively head for areas of brighter light. Artificial lighting causes thousands of hatchling deaths each year.
