National Park Service Finds Hazardous Materials on Horn Island Part of the Mississippi Barrier Island Is Closed to the Public

Ocean Springs, Miss --- Gulf Islands National Seashore Superintendent Dan Brown will conduct a press briefing at 10 a.m. CST on Monday, August 20 on the partial closure of Horn Island to the public.

WHO:Gulf Islands National Seashore Superintendent Dan Brown and National Park Service Public and Environmental Health representatives.

WHAT: Briefing on the partial closure of Horn Island to the public after the discovery of hazardous materials on a portion of the island.

WHEN:Monday, August 20, 10 a.m., CST

WHERE: William Colmer Visitor Center, Davis Bayou Area, 3500 Park Road, Ocean Springs, Mississippi.

WHY: To inform the public about the discovery of hazardous materials on Horn Island, the partial closure of the island to protect the public from the hazards, and the National Park Service's plan to address the problem.

HOW: Superintendent Brown and subject matter experts will be available to answer questions after the press briefing.

The press briefing will be followed by an optional boat excursion to Horn Island on a National Park Service boat for video and photo opportunities
